At least in my experience, US history is what I was taught in childhood and then I later discovered Japanese history and studied that for fun. The sources dealing with one rarely acknowledge the other to the point you might as well have two separate universes; All American Minutemen with a side of Thanksgiving, Jamestown and Civil Wars in one corner and Samurai Showdown in the other. But in real life, it's one single interconnected timeline.
Either way, if the Samurai is the best known version he'll have not just a katana but also a bow, polearm, and arquebus/tanegashima.
